Up on its hind legs with both forelegs raised, the horse fills the height of the sheet while a line of mountains sits low behind it. It is the most dramatic pose in the collection and the easiest to ruin: a single flat colour over the whole body flattens the movement, whereas leaving the belly and the inside of the legs a shade lighter keeps the animal round. The mountains want the palest pencil in the box so they stay behind. From five, twelve minutes or so. A gentler pose is on Two Horses, standing nose to nose.
