The horse is drawn entirely in knotwork, every line passing over and under the next, with a woven border running along the top and bottom of the sheet in the same pattern. Less a picture of an animal than a pattern in the shape of one, and that changes how it is coloured: follow a single strand all the way through in one colour before starting the next, and the weave holds together.
